Privacy Statement
We collect as little as possible: what you type into the contact form, and the standard records our web server keeps. We do not sell it, and we do not track you around the internet.
Last updated 16 August 2026.
Who this applies to
This statement covers personal information collected through https://northumberlandfisheriesmuseum.ca by Northumberland Fisheries Museum. We handle personal information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
What we collect
Information you give us
If you use our contact form, we collect the name, email address, phone number (if you provide one) and message you enter. If you email or call us instead, we receive whatever you choose to tell us.
Information collected automatically
Like almost every website, our web server records standard technical information each time a page is requested: your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, the referring page, and your browser and operating system. These logs are kept by our hosting provider and are used for security and for diagnosing faults.
When you submit the contact form, your IP address is included in the message we receive. This helps us deal with spam and abuse.
What we do not collect
This site has no user accounts, no login, no shopping cart, and no online payments. Admission tickets, memberships and donations are handled on a separate website operated by Square — we never see or store your card details. We do not ask for and do not want financial information, government identification numbers, or sensitive personal information such as health, race, religion or political views. Please do not send these through our forms.
We do not use advertising networks or social media tracking pixels on this site.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit the site and which pages they find useful. It sets cookies in your browser and reports information to Google, including your approximate location, the pages you view, and the browser and device you use. Google may process this information outside Canada.
We use this only to see how the site is performing as a whole, not to identify individual visitors. You can opt out across all websites using Google’s opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser settings.
Why we collect it, and your consent
We use the information you send us for one purpose: to respond to your enquiry and, if you go ahead, to arrange and provide the services you have asked for. Server logs are used to keep the site running and secure.
By submitting the contact form you consent to us using your information for that purpose. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us — though if you do, we may no longer be able to respond to an open enquiry. We will not use your details to send you marketing unless you ask us to.
Who we share it with
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information.
We share it only with the service providers we need in order to run the site and receive your message:
- Our web hosting provider, which operates the server this site runs on and keeps the access logs described above.
- Our email delivery provider, which transmits form submissions to our inbox, and our email provider, which stores them.
- Google Analytics, which reports how the site is used, as described above.
- Square, which operates the separate checkout used for tickets, memberships and donations, under its own privacy policy.
These providers process information on our behalf and are required to protect it. Some of them may store or process data on servers outside Canada, which means it may be subject to the laws of that country. We will otherwise disclose personal information only where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to establish or defend a legal claim.
Cookies
This site sets no advertising cookies.
Analytics cookies are set by Google Analytics, as described above. They record how the site is used, not who you are, and you can block them in your browser or with Google’s opt-out add-on.
A single session cookie (PHPSESSID) is set only if you submit the contact form or a community room request. It exists so that the page can show you a confirmation or an error message, and it is discarded when you close your browser. Nothing about you is stored in it.
How long we keep it
Contact form submissions arrive as email and are kept in our mailbox for as long as we need them for the enquiry, and afterwards for our ordinary business records. Server logs are kept for a short period by our hosting provider, typically a few weeks, and are then deleted. If you ask us to delete your information and we are not required to keep it, we will.
How we protect it
This site is served over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and contact form submissions are transmitted over an encrypted connection to our email provider. Access to the resulting email is limited to the people in our business who need it.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Please do not send confidential or sensitive information through the contact form.
Your rights
Under PIPEDA you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to ask for a copy of it, to have inaccurate information corrected, and to withdraw your consent to our use of it. Contact us using the details below and we will respond within a reasonable time, normally within 30 days.
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your personal information or your complaint, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca.
Other websites
This site links to other websites, including our social media pages. Once you follow a link you are subject to that site's own privacy practices, not ours. We encourage you to read them.
Children
This site is intended for adults enquiring about our services. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
